Aluminum Anodizing Type 2 Sulfuric

Print Version Aluminum Anodizing (Type 2)

Type II Anodizing: Sulfuric Acid...non-conductive...excellent corrosion protection...improved wear...superior base coat...decorative colors

Type II Anodizing, also called architectural anodizing, is an electrochemical process that creates an aluminum oxide film by rapidly controlling the oxidation of an aluminum surface. The resulting aluminum oxide film is electrically non-conductive and porous. Type II Anodizing provides excellent corrosion protection, improved wear characteristics, and is an superior base coat for additional coating applications. The major benefit of Type II Anodizing is the ability to add a myriad of decorative colors and dyes. Chem Processing, Inc. does not bright dip finish, but does offer nickel acetate, hot water, and chromate seals, as well as Type III Hardcoat Anodizing.

For aerospace applications, Chem Processing offers Type II Anodizing and Chem Film (Alodine, Iridite) via selective masking.

Chem Processing Inc. Type II Anodizing Capabilities:

  • Typical Formed Thickness is 0.00005 to 0.0002 in.
  • Rack Anodizing
  • Available Masking for Selective Surface Anodizing
  • Salt Spray Corrosion Test (minimum 336 hours of salt spray resistance)
  • Thickness Analysis

Applicable Specifications:

MIL-A-8625F Type II
MIL-STD-186 E (202 & 203)
ASTM B5580 (Type B,C,D,E,F)
MIL-STD-193K & 194A
MIL-STD-171D (7.1.1 & 7.1.2)
MIL-F-14072B (E511)
AMS 2471 & 2472
ASTM B117

Properties of Type II Anodizing:

  • Corrosion Resistance: resistant to salt-water and atmospheric attacks.
  • Decorative Appearance: Luster can range from dull to high depending on the base metal. The brighter the base metal, the brighter the anodize.
  • Electrical Insulation: Aluminum oxide is a dielectric.
  • Color Flexibility: Wide spectrum of colors can be obtained.
  • Paint Adhesion: Offers a chemically active surface for most paint systems.
  • Adhesive Bonding: Improves bond strength and durability.
  • Emissivity: Films with a thickness >0.00032 in. increases the emissivity of the aluminum.

Chem Processing Inc. offers aluminum anodizing services to Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, the Midwest and beyond. CPI is strategically located by highway routes to Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, St. Louis, and Minneapolis. The CPI facility is minutes from Rockford Chicago International Airport, a major Midwestern air freight hub, enabling efficient door-to-door delivery across the United States or across the globe.
