Used to detect surface cracks, forging defects and leaks in new metal fabricated components...Fatigue cracks on in-Service Components
Dye penetrant inspection (DPI), also called liquid penetrant testing (LPT), is an inspection method used in the aerospace and other industries to detect surface cracks, casting and forging defects and leaks in new metal fabricated components. Dye penetrant Inspection is also used to detect fatigue cracks on in-service components.
The process requires that the clean metal surface be coated with fluorescent dye, which penetrates surface discontinuities. After a predetermined time interval, excess dye is removed from the surface and a black light is used to activate the dye which remains in discontinuities, rendering them visually detectable. Chem Processing, Inc. offers dye penetrant and magnetic particle non-destructive testing services as a compliment to its full range of metal finishing services, including cadmium plating, electroless nickel plating, manganese phosphate and others. Chem Processing, Inc. has a strategic alliance with Superior Joining Technologies, Inc. a NADCAP certified FAA repair center.
Properties of Dye Penetrant Inspection:- Dye penetrant inspection is less effective on part surfaces that are excessively rough and/or porous
- Dye penetrant inspection does not reveal sub-surface discontinuities.
- In some cases, pass/fail is not contingent on discontinuities alone, but on the location and extent of the discontinuity
Applicable Specifications: ASTM E 1417 PL-AMS-2644 ASTM E165-80/ASME SE-165
Applications of Dye Penetrant Testing:- Aerospace: quality control on new airframe parts and assemblies
- Aircraft Service and Repair: detection of fatigue cracks
- Medical: check for leaks and imperfections
- Military/Defense: testing of welds for cracks and voids
- Heavy Equipment: inspection of stress susceptible
